The history of the Czech Republic can be traced back to the medieval Duchy of Bohemia (western part of today’s Czech Republic), which emerged in the 9th century and later became part of the Holy Roman Empire. Following the collapse of Austria-Hungary after World War I, the Czech lands united with Slovakia to form Czechoslovakia in 1918.
On 1 January 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully dissolved into two independent states—the Czech Republic and Slovakia—in an event known as the Velvet Divorce. Since then, the Czech Republic has evolved into a stable parliamentary democracy and a developed economy, becoming a member of both the European Union and NATO.
We spent seven days in the Czech Republic, visiting six cities, many of which are home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites. To make the most of our trip, we rented a car and drove between destinations, giving us the flexibility to explore the historic towns and the scenic countryside at our own pace. We were also fortunate to enjoy warm, sunny weather throughout our visit (end of May 2026).
