Slovakia

Visited in June 2026

Slovakia was part of the Kingdom of Hungary for nearly a thousand years, beginning around the 10th century. After World War I, it joined with the Czech lands to form Czechoslovakia in 1918. Following communist rule from 1948 to 1989, the country became independent in 1993 after the peaceful “Velvet Divorce” with the Czech Republic.

We visited Slovakia after spending a week in Czech Republic. During our 7-day trip here, we explored Slovakia’s historic old towns and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, along with two days hiking in Slovak Paradise National Park and the High Tatras. We traveled by rental car, which gave us the flexibility to visit around six cities and enjoy a varied and well-paced journey in good weather.

  • Trenčín & Vlkolínec – Stop on the way from Brno to Poprad
  • Poprad – 4 Nights
  • Bardejov – Half day trip from Poprad
  • Hiking in Slovak Paradise National Park – Day trip from Poprad
  • Hiking in High Tatras – Day trip from Poprad
  • Levoča & Spiš Castle – Day trip from Poprad
