Poprad

4 nights in Airbnb Apartmán Karpatská

Poprad is a major city in northern Slovakia at the foot of the High Tatras. It is the largest town in the Spiš region and an important gateway for visitors to the High Tatras mountains and Slovak Paradise National Park.

During our stay, we rented an Airbnb in a modern apartment complex with several grocery stores nearby. The property included basement garage parking, and the city center was about a 20-minute walk away, making it a convenient base for exploring the area.

Namestie Svätého Egídia – is one of the main squares in Poprad, but during our visit much of the area was undergoing renovation and construction, limiting our ability to fully appreciate the square. The square is home to the historic Church of St. Egidius, which was closed at the time of our visit. Although we could not enter, we were able to catch a glimpse of its interior through the barred entrance.

Next to the Church of St. Egidius stands a historic Renaissance bell tower, one of the landmarks of Námestie svätého Egídia. Built in the late 16th century, the tower complements the church and adds to the square’s historic character. Visitors can climb the tower as part of a guided tour to enjoy panoramic views of Poprad and the surrounding area.

Spišská Sobota – Located about a one-mile walk from Námestie Svätého Egídia(see above section), this charming square with cobbled streets, colorful houses, and peaceful atmosphere, feels more like a traditional village than a city square.

At the center of the square stands the historic Church of St. George, the oldest building in the area. Parts of its original Romanesque structure from the mid-12th century have been preserved, while significant Gothic additions were made during the 15th and early 16th centuries, including five Gothic altars. Beside the church is a Renaissance bell tower built between 1588 and 1589.

Spišská Sobota developed as a prosperous market town from the 13th century and gained city privileges in 1271. Its distinctive funnel-shaped square, lined with burgher houses displaying Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque influences, preserves the layout of a medieval trading settlement.

Spišská Sobota, Brokoff House (right hand corner) – This historic townhouse is associated with Johann (Ján) Brokoff, a renowned Baroque sculptor born in the town in 1652. A commemorative plaque on the building marks his birthplace.

AquaCity Poprad – is one of Slovakia’s largest eco-friendly thermal water resorts, offering a combination of water attractions, wellness facilities, and accommodations. The resort features 13 indoor and outdoor thermal pools with temperatures ranging from 28°C to 38°C, numerous water slides, and Slovakia’s largest two-story Fire & Water Wellness & Spa.

Poprad Football Stadium – One of the most striking landmarks in Poprad is the National Training Centre Poprad football stadium. Its distinctive shiny blue oval design makes it hard to miss when driving through the city, especially near AquaCity Poprad.

The stadium regularly hosts training camps for Slovakia’s national football teams and has a seating capacity of 5,700 spectators. Built to FIFA and UEFA standards, it is equipped to host international and televised matches. One of its most innovative features is an environmentally friendly under-soil heating system that uses geothermal water from AquaCity Poprad, helping to maintain the pitch in an energy-efficient manner.

Walk along the Poprad River – Between the apartment blocks, you’ll often spot patches of green, especially along the river that flows through the city. In the center, there’s a walking path along the water, with a few small parks and a playground. It’s a nice place for a stroll on a warm day.
