Lost River Gorge

Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves, is a protected natural area featuring a series of boulder caves and a narrow glacial gorge in the White Mountains and is located along New Hampshire Route 112. The area gets its name from the Lost River, a brook that drains the southern part of Kinsman Notch (one of the major passes in the White Mountains), and disappears beneath massive granite boulders in a steep, narrow gorge. The water flows underground through the spaces between these rocks before re-emerging downstream to join the Pemigewasset River, which flows south from Franconia Notch.

Visitors enter the gorge area via a staircase and explore it along a 0.75 mile boardwalk that winds through the dramatic landscape. Set aside about 2 hours to experience this gorge. There is a wooden walkway for pretty much the entire journey, so you’re not navigating rugged or uneven terrain, though you will be climbing up/down many sets of stairs along the way.

You’ll encounter several beautiful waterfalls and flowing streams along the path.

You’ll also come across several caves, some of which are quite narrow and tight. A few even have small ladders to help you climb out. Overall, it’s a fun and adventurous experience.

As you walk back to the entrance, you can wind your way past a huge nest with a view! I climbed into the nest for a fun picture.
