We made a day trip to Negril from Montego Bay on this day. The town of Negril, in the western corner of Jamaica is a haven for beach lovers, famous for beautiful sunsets, a 7-mile stretch of bright white sandy beach, and picturesque cliffs overlooking the clear blue waters. The name Negril is a shortened version of Negrillo (Little black one), as it was originally named by the Spaniards in 1494, because there was a vast population of black eels along Negril’s coast.
The drive from Montego Bay to Negril is 77 km and takes about about 1 hour 30 min. The drive along the Caribbean sea was gorgeous. After we reached Negril, our first stop was at Rick’s Cafe – Perched high above the ocean, its a great place to get a bite to eat and watch cliff divers in action. A short walk from Rick’s CafĂ© is Negril Lighthouse. Built in 1894, it towers 30 meters above sea level and is the highest structure in Negril. It is not open to public, but you can view it from the outside.
We spent a good 3 hours at this place watching all the divers, eating and drinking and just enjoying the view.
Negril Seven Mile Beach – Stretching from Bloody Bay in the north to Long Bay and the Negril Cliffs in the south, Negril Beach is one of Jamaica’s finest beach. It is actually only 4 miles long, and great for strolling, swimming, and sunbathing. There are many restaurants and resorts along the beach.
We spent about an hour walking along the beach and then drove back to Montego Bay. We flew back to USA the next day.
