The state of Tamil Nadu is located in the extreme south of India. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the east and south. The climate of Tamil Nadu is essentially tropical. In May and June, the hottest months, maximum daily temperatures in Chennai, its capital city, average about 100 °F (38 °C), while minimum temperatures average in the low 80s F (upper 20s C).
Tamil Nadu is famous for its many temples, which number in the tens of thousands. Many of the temples are 1000s of years old and some of them have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tamil Nadu, also has a vibrant music and dance scene that reflects its rich cultural history. Bharatanatyam, a classical dance, originated in Tamil Nadu and is one of the oldest classical dances in India. It’s often used to express Hindu religious stories and devotions. Carnatic music (South Indian classical music) is very popular here with the city of Chennai having the largest number of Carnatic musicians.
