Located in Tioga State Forest, Pine Creek Gorge, also called The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, is a 47-mile gorge carved into the Allegheny Plateau by Pine Creek (tributary of the Susquehanna River) in north-central Pennsylvania. The gorge begins south of Ansonia near Wellsboro along US route 6 and continues south. This place is one of the 7 natural wonders of Pennsylvania and we visited this place at the beginning of fall in 2019. Plan on spending a whole day if you want to visit all the sites mentioned on this page.
There are 2 places from where you can enjoy a view of the gorge : the east and the west rim.
Leonard Harrison State Park (East Rim) – Our first stop was at the Leonard Harrison State Park area on the east rim. The Overlook here gives you a wonderful southern view of the PA Grand Canyon.
There is also the Turkey Path trail on this side which is a 1-mile trail (one way) that takes you down to the canyon. There are steps built along this trail and you can enjoy some waterfalls and view of the canyon along this path.
Once you reach the floor of the canyon, you can enjoy the pine creek rail trail along the pine creek river. The trail used to be a rail road and has been converted to a hiking/biking trail.
Colton Point State Park (West Rim) – Directly opposite from Leonard Harrison State Park and on the west rim, is the Colton Point State Park from where you will get a different and more scenic view of the gorge. You can also see the bike/hike path for a overlook on this side.
