The formation of Telangana as a separate state was the result of a long historical and political movement.
After India gained independence in 1947, the region of Telangana was part of the princely state of Hyderabad. In 1948, Hyderabad was integrated into the Indian Union and in 1956, the Telugu-speaking region of Telangana was merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh under the States Reorganization Act.
Over time, people in Telangana raised concerns about inequality and lack of representation which led to prolonged protests and a strong statehood movement, especially from the 1960s onward. Finally, Telangana was formed as India’s 29th state on 2 June 2014, with Hyderabad as its capital.
Before moving to the United States in 1992, I lived and grew up in Hyderabad, which was the capital of Andhra Pradesh at the time.
