Vancouver

Visited in 2003

Vancouver is a major city in Western Canada and the most populous city in British Columbia, and is known for its cultural diversity, high quality of life, and high cost of housing. The city’s history stretches back over 10,000 years, beginning with Indigenous settlements of the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.

Today, Vancouver is a global port city with the largest and busiest port in Canada. While forestry remains important, tourism and film production play major roles in the economy, with the city earning the nickname Hollywood North.

Capilano Suspension Bridge – is one of British Columbia’s most famous attractions, stretching 137 metres (450 feet) across the Capilano River and hanging 70 metres (230 feet) above the forest floor. Originally built in 1889, the bridge is surrounded by a lush coastal rainforest that showcases towering Douglas firs, cedar trees, and scenic river views. Walking across the gently swaying bridge offers visitors a thrilling perspective of the canyon and the natural beauty of the North Shore mountains.

Beyond the bridge itself, the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park features several additional attractions that enhance the experience. The totem poles at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Carved in the traditional style of local First Nations, the poles depict animals, legends, and ancestral stories that reflect deep spiritual and cultural meanings. Set against the surrounding rainforest, the totem poles offer visitors an opportunity to learn about Indigenous art, history, and storytelling while enhancing the park’s natural and cultural experience.
