Lakes

We visited Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park in 2023, and on the way back to Pittsburgh, we stopped at Tygart Lake for a relaxing boat cruise that added a scenic end to the trip.

Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park is located along the shores of Stonewall Jackson Lake, and was originally completed in 1990 with basic park facilities. The site later expanded into a full resort through a public–private partnership led by McCabe-Henley Properties. Today, the park—marketed as Stonewall Resort State Park—features a lodge, marina, golf course, and recreational amenities and is situated about 10 miles south of Weston, just off Interstate 79.

We spent some time walking around the resort residing on the banks of the scenic Stonewall Jackson lake.

Stonewall Jackson lake houses one of the many Almost Heaven swings which are a popular scenic attractions across West Virginia. Installed as part of the state’s Almost Heaven tourism initiative, these large wooden swings invite visitors to relax, take photos, and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the landscape.

We had dinner at the Stonewall Jackson Resort, after which we took a leisurely walk along the pedestrian boardwalk, beautifully illuminated with colorful lights that created a charming nighttime atmosphere.

Cruising on Tygart Lake – Located in Tygart Lake State Park on the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in scenic north-central West Virginia, The lake stretches 11 miles, offering boating, swimming, fishing and scuba diving.

We stopped by, rented a pontoon boat, and spent a couple of hours leisurely cruising across the water, eventually making our way to Tygart Dam, which regulates the waters of the Tygart Valley River and forms the storage reservoir known as Tygart Lake.
