Although Panama is best known for the Panama Canal, the 77 kilometer (48 mile) waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, it has more to offer to travelers than just this engineering marvel.
- Panama is fortunate to have fantastic beaches on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
- Panama City’s old town (Casco Viejo) is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- You can see the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean on the same day. The Transisthmian Highway from Panama City to Colon, roughly runs along the Panama Canal and is approximately 55 miles long and takes about 1.5 hours.
- The rainforests of Panama, are some of the world’s most biologically diverse areas. Chagres National Park, situated east of Gatun Lake and the northern half of Panama Canal, has 1,185 species of plants and is home to many mammals and birds.
We visited this country in December of 2023. The temperatures were in the upper 80F with occasional rain during the day and night. A bit of useful information for travelers to Panama is that its currency is US dollars.
