South Dakota is located in the North Central region of United States. The state is named after the Dakota Sioux tribe, which comprises a large portion of the population. The state is bisected by the Missouri River, dividing it into two geographically and socially distinct halves known as East River and West River. South Dakota lies in both the Mountain and Central Time Zone. Mountain Time contains most of the western half of the state, including Mount Rushmore.
